5 Fraud Prevention Tips for Seniors

Older adults often fall prey to savvy criminals who build trust and confidence in schemes that involve romance, sweepstakes, tech support and government impersonations, among others. Each year, the senior population racks up more than $3 billion in losses, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

How common is elderly fraud? An estimated 1 in 20 older adults have suffered from monetary scams or frauds. Scams have a devastating effect on older adults who have fallen victim. This leaves them in a very vulnerable situation with little to no time to recover the loss.

What is an elderly fraud scheme? It’s important know about the most common financial scams that target seniors.

Health Insurance Scam

Every United States citizen over the age of 65 is eligible for Medicare. In these types of scams, a person posing as a health care representative gathers a senior’s personal information. The scammer then uses the collected information to bill Medicare and pocket the money.

Telemarketing or Phone Scams

This is the most common scam that preys on seniors. Older adults make twice as many purchases over the telephone compared to the national average. Since there is no face-to-face interaction or paper trail, it is extremely difficult to trace the origin of these calls.

Sometimes the buyer’s name is shared with similar scammers, leading to repeated defrauding of the same individual. The most common tactics used are ones where money is solicited for fake charities or natural disasters, or on the pretext of financial need for a person’s child or loved one being admitted to the hospital.

Internet Fraud

Since older adults have slowly adapted to technology and the Internet, they’ve become easy targets for automated Internet scams. Pop-ups that simulate virus-scanning software trick victims into downloading fake programs that allow scammers to access victims’ personal information from their computers, including passwords.

Email or phishing scam messages that appear to come from legitimate companies asking the users to update or verify their personal information is another example. Some emails appear to come from the IRS concerning tax refunds.

How can you protect yourself or a senior loved one from falling victim to a scam or fraud?

Try to keep ahead of the fraudsters and stay up to date on various scams on fbi.gov, and remember these five preventative fraud tips:

Prevent Telemarketing Calls

Place yourself on the National Do Not Call Registry, which gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls and how to report unwanted calls.

Don’t Be Rushed

Resist the pressure to act immediately. Scammers often use this as a tactic to lure victims to spring into action. It is best to call a family member, or even the police, if you feel as if you or your life is in danger.

Beware of Technology

Technology such as email and social media help seniors stay engaged with friends and family, but it is also used to scam seniors. Be sure all anti-virus software is up to date, make sure passwords are secure and encrypted, and be wary of distant or estranged relatives and friends who appear suddenly.

Don’t Answer Personal Questions

Never share personally identifiable information such as bank account numbers, social security numbers, security questions or passwords with anyone except your care manager or power of attorney.

Monitor Your Money

Lastly, keep a close watch on all your bank accounts for any suspicious activity. You will also want to monitor your credit report for any new credit cards and loans that you did not authorize.

Staying ahead of the issue will help prevent fraudulent attacks. Remember, if you question the legitimacy of the request or transaction, be sure to contact your loved ones or the local police to report it.

How To Report a Scam

If you believe you or someone you know may have been a victim of elder fraud, contact your local FBI field office or submit a tip online. You can also file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Senior Living Services & Amenities You Can’t Get at Home

Living Your Best Life: Senior Living Services and Amenities That Make All the Difference

When you think about your ideal retirement, what comes to mind? Do you imagine yourself traveling, meeting new people, volunteering for a local organization or simply spending more time pursuing a favorite hobby? A senior living community can be the perfect addition to your retirement plans, because it offers amenities and services that make meeting your health and wellness goals even easier.

An independent senior living community blends the freedom of living at home with the active, vibrant lifestyle that only community life can offer. When older adults begin their search for a senior living community, they often first look at location, the level of care offered and whether the community fits within their budget. These are all important factors, but we also encourage you to think about the lifestyle you want to live.

The services and amenities offered at a senior living community play a critical role in your happiness and can enhance your overall retirement experience. These offerings are meant to enrich lives, encourage connections and promote independence.

At Hawthorn Senior Living communities, every day offers a variety of activities and events to choose from that promote physical activity, lifelong learning, social connection and overall wellness without compromising independence.

Check out the services and amenities that only life at a senior living community can offer, and you may find yourself considering the move.

Pursue New Passions and Old Hobbies

Retirement is an exciting opportunity to pursue an old hobby full-time or finally learn a new skill you’ve never had the time to investigate. Senior living communities include spaces where artistic expression, craftsmanship and other creative passions can thrive. On-site art studios and classes, workshops and theaters not only allow residents to pursue their own creativity but help to connect them to other like-minded individuals.

Hawthorn promotes an engaging lifestyle by offering residents opportunities to enjoy and participate in the arts, learn new skills and discuss current issues, as well as opportunities to travel to locations throughout the United States. Residents engage in a variety of intellectual and cultural activities that include creative writing classes, book and garden clubs, discussion groups, creative art projects, cooking demonstrations and much more.

At regularly planned group outings, residents can visit museums and galleries or attend concerts and theater performances. We encourage our residents to take advantage of many opportunities to continue to learn and grow.

Stay Physically Fit

Physical exercise and staying active are essential to a healthy senior lifestyle, and the best independent living communities offer plenty of opportunities to stay physically fit. Fitness centers, swimming pools, group exercise classes and personal trainers are all great amenities for seniors to take advantage of to enhance their physical health. Some communities also include walking trails and bocce and pickleball courts for those who enjoy exercising outdoors.

A Complete Culinary Experience

A major component of successful aging is ensuring you get the proper amount of nutrients and healthy foods into your diet. But meal preparation is time-consuming and potentially expensive. Even if you enjoy cooking, you may not have the time or energy to shop for and prepare nutritious meals every day.

In a senior living community, you’ll have access to quality nutritious meals so you don’t have worry about cooking or cleaning up. You can enjoy homemade meals in a social setting just a few feet from your door. You’ll no longer have to drive to eat out or stress about your next meal. You’ll get the benefits of eating out at every meal, but without the hassle. And if you enjoy baking or creating a special dish, a community kitchen is available for your use.

Dining at Hawthorn is more than just eating three meals a day. It’s a full culinary experience with delicious, freshly made food and engaging company. Our culinary experience features healthy foods and homemade meals, all catered to your needs and desires.

Three unique chef-prepared meals are served daily restaurant-style, so you never have worry about cooking or cleaning – unless you want to! Our menu offers a variety of nutritional choices at every meal, and snacks and beverages are available 24/7.

Worry-Free Living

Are you getting tired of constantly cleaning your home? Does the thought of keeping up with landscaping and mowing cause you stress? Do you see the damage on your roof and wonder when it will have to be replaced? Are you discouraged by the constant demands of home maintenance that inevitably come with owning a home?

Life at a senior living community alleviates these stressors. Forget about the roof, the lawn and the housework – at a senior living community, the team members take care of upkeep for you. If something needs repair, all it takes is a quick phone call to a helpful team member.

Most communities, including Hawthorn, offer weekly housekeeping and linen services. So you get to enjoy the comforts of home and beautiful landscaping without any of the work, expense or risk to your health. And with less time spent on maintenance, you can take advantage of all the community has to offer.

Safety and Security

Living at home alone sounds great, but what happens when you accidentally fall or your health takes an unexpected turn? Living alone can turn a minor incident into a serious situation. When you live at a senior living community, you are living in a beautiful new home filled with wonderful people. You will have a network of staff, friends and neighbors interested in your well-being who are generally available just when you need them.

Senior living communities also include safety and security across the campus, giving you peace of mind that someone is always looking out for you, your neighbors and your home.

Questions To Ask About Services and Amenities

While shopping for senior living, it’s important to schedule tours of the communities on your short list. That way you can experience the culture of the community, meet residents and see what it really has to offer. We’ve put together a list of questions about services and amenities to ask team members while on tour.

What unique services and amenities do you offer that make you stand out from other communities?

What amenities and activities are most popular with residents?

What’s the dining experience like? Do you cater to residents with dietary restrictions? How often does the menu change?

What social opportunities does your community offer? Do you have an activities calendar I can see?

What educational opportunities does your community offer?

What recreational and wellness activities does your community offer?

What is there to do nearby the community?

Do you offer transportation services? How frequently is it offered?

Do you allow pets? Do you charge pet fees?

Independent Senior Living Versus Assisted Living

Choosing the Right Senior Living: Comparing Independent Living and Assisted Living Options

When it comes to the big choices in life, a variety of options can seem intimidating. For many older adults, that can certainly be the case when it comes time to make the big decisions about retirement and housing options. As retirees begin to evaluate their living situation, living independently is one of the main concerns.

Aging in place offers a strong sense of familiarity and comfort, so it often feels like the most ideal option. However, living on your own can be isolating and overwhelming with household chores and regular home maintenance. If you are suffering from a medical condition, household responsibilities can become even more difficult for you to handle on your own.

Senior living communities provide the best of both worlds – freedom, independence and peace of mind with all the comforts of home. Senior living communities can be life-changing, offering access to a more active lifestyle, meaningful friendships and a profound and lasting sense of purpose. They are a reliable remedy to many common aging challenges, with the power to reduce loneliness, boost self-esteem and provide emotional support. They also offer a sense of security without compromising privacy.

If you’re looking at a variety of senior living options, there can be a lot of confusing terminology to learn and information to gather. The best place to start your journey is by understanding the two most popular senior living options – independent living and assisted living.

But what’s the difference between independent living and assisted living? While independent living caters to active seniors who don’t need daily support, assisted living offers amenities and programs like those found in independent living but with additional support for activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and medication management.

So which option is right for you? Here’s what you need to know as you make the decision.

What Is Independent Living?

It’s a common misconception that senior living communities are for older people who need continuous care, but for most, that is simply not the case. If you want to enjoy a lifestyle where you can pursue your passions without the burden of household chores, then independent living is perfect for you.

These communities trade the worries of homeownership – like utilities, home maintenance and landscaping – for peace of mind and a fulfilling retirement. Most independent senior living communities are designed to feel and function like a home, while giving you opportunities to participate in activities like social activities, educational seminars, fitness classes, volunteer opportunities and excursions.

Most independent senior living communities also offer amenities such as a fitness center, swimming pool, tennis and pickleball courts and more. Other services may include on-site spas, beauty and barber salons and housekeeping and laundry services. Most communities today, including all Hawthorn communities, are even pet-friendly.

Freed from daily chores like cooking, residents enjoy restaurant-style dining and a culinary team who creates personalized, flavorful meals three times a day. Snacks and beverages are available all day as well.

Independent Living at Hawthorn

At Hawthorn Senior Living, older adults can enjoy an engaging lifestyle alongside personalized amenities and services that encourage multidimensional wellness. Independent living at Hawthorn is where active seniors searching for an all-inclusive, stress-free lifestyle can thrive. It also provides benefits that lead to a fulfilling retirement with opportunities to enjoy hobbies, pursue new passions, embrace a healthy lifestyle, and live life the way you want.

What makes independent living at Hawthorn stand out from other communities is that select properties offer our live-in manager program. Through this unique, caring approach to senior living, our managers are able to enhance the retirement experience of our residents throughout their stay.

If you are looking for a senior living option where you don’t need daily support and want access to gourmet dining, activities, classes and more, then explore independent senior living.

Independent living is suitable for older adults who:

  • Don’t want the burden of home maintenance and household chores
  • Are looking for opportunities to meet new people and expand their social circle
  • Want easy access to daily activities
  • Are seeking a fulfilling retirement that provides peace of mind and avenues to pursue whatever they love most

Is independent living a good option for you?

What Is Assisted Living?

As an older adult’s needs increase beyond what is available in independent living, assisted living serves as the next level in care and services. Assisted living is designed to support residents and their individual needs. The services provided in assisted living vary from person to person, as plans are customized based on the needs of each resident. Assisted living residents enjoy the same amenities as those in independent living, but with additional assistance in activities of daily living, such as medication management, dressing and bathing.

In addition, residents are typically provided with:

  • Three meals per day plus snacks
  • Housekeeping and linen services
  • Fitness and wellness programs
  • Social and recreational activities
  • Transportation services for scheduled outings and medical appointments

Although assisted living communities don’t provide intensive, long-term care for older adults with serious mental or physical conditions, team members are on-call 24/7 at most communities.

Assisted Living at Hawthorn

Hawthorn assisted living communities feature an active lifestyle with a full complement of amenities and services so you or your loved one feels safe and secure. We strive to enhance independence within a community of gracious care and support.

Our goal is to provide each resident with the unique personal care they need while helping to maintain their independent lifestyle. Our compassionate health care team supports our residents 24/7 to provide around-the-clock services as needed. Team members at our assisted living communities include full time RNs and LPNs, medication assistants and resident assistants.

We also offer additional personal services, and because we focus on individual needs and preferences, you only pay for the services you need. Optional services include medication management (including diabetic care); assistance with bathing, dressing and mobility; health monitoring; and more.

Assisted living is suitable for older adults who:

  • Want all the amenities and services of independent living but require additional care support
  • Require assistance with activities of daily living like grooming and bathing
  • Are looking to pursue passions and increase socialization and connections through daily scheduled activities, events, classes and outings

Is assisted living a good option for you?

It’s a time when children are going back to school, parents are frazzled and the rhythm of summer fun is slowing down. While most people are struggling to get back into a routine, residents at Hawthorn Senior Living are living it up and taking advantage of all the unique and engaging activities and events.

August is not only Family Fun Month and National Picnic Month, but also Peach Month and Romance Awareness Month. In fact, there seems to be a wacky, wonderful holiday nearly every day in August. There are even weekly holidays like Simplify Your Life Week, Smile Week, Friendship Week and Be Kind to Humankind Week. What more can we expect from any month?

At Hawthorn Senior Living, our teams are always dreaming up ways to inspire creativity, engage minds within our communities and provide abundant social activities for seniors.

Hawthorn communities have so many activities, events and special occasions that it’s a party every day! This month has been chock-full of entertainment and socializing with friends and family members, and we’re not just playing bingo. So, what do seniors do for fun? Let’s look back to see what a few of our communities have been up to lately!

Craft Corner

For many older adults, an arts and crafts program may not seem like a necessary investment in your mental health and well-being. However, as a person gets older, these programs can help improve socialization opportunities and keep the brain stimulated and healthy. What is the benefit of arts and crafts in your life? Hawthorn Senior Living offers a range of solutions to help you embrace this and other programs while providing fun for seniors.

For National Watermelon Day, the residents at Parker Place in Mentor, Ohio, went to their local farmers market and picked up fresh peaches, watermelons, plums and nectarines. The community served the locally sourced fruit during beanbag baseball, and the rest was served up by the culinary team during mealtime.

Residents at Chesterfield Heights in Midlothian, Virginia, and Sterling Heights in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, got creative on National Watermelon Day. The communities made adorable yet practical coasters and tea towels.

Making art, big or small, can be a great stress relief and beneficial to your overall health. A group of residents at Oak Park in Salisbury, North Carolina, look forward to craft class every week and spending time with friends.

Out and About

Who doesn’t love a day trip shopping, sightseeing or enjoying a delicious lunch? Hawthorn residents have been staying busy by getting out and exploring!

Residents at Williams Place in Davidson, North Carolina, explored The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Botanical Gardens. The group enjoyed a beautiful day out and discovered plants they’d never seen before. It was definitely an educational and fun field trip for the residents.

August is the perfect time to stroll through sunflower fields with friends. Residents at Sterling Heights soaked up the sunshine while visiting a local sunflower farm.

Unique Happenings

To celebrate the anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock music festival, Parker Place hosted a special tie-dye-themed social for the residents. The residents represented the ’60s by dressing up as hippies and enjoying a drink called Hippie Punch. Residents even tie-dyed tea towels while listening to Jimi Hendrix. Residents and team members alike had fun reminiscing the adventures they had in the ’60s and where they were when Woodstock took place!

Many senior living communities today include pet therapy to improve the quality of life of their residents. Research shows pet therapy can help address some of the physical and emotional needs of older adults by improving sleep, reducing depression and enhancing mood.

The Zoo Crew visited the residents at The Bradley in Kanata, Ontario, and brought an array of animals for the residents to hold, touch and cuddle. From chinchillas and lizards to rabbits and turtles, the residents greatly benefitted from pet therapy and seeing the adorable animals.

Benefits of Pet Ownership for Seniors

Pawsitive Effects: Exploring the Benefits of Pet Ownership for Seniors

From birds of a feather to dog lovers and cat people – there are as many different types of personalities as there are pets to fit them! And while pet ownership does come with responsibilities, it brings more than just a wagging tail into your life.

The companionship of a pet can be an invaluable tool bringing purpose and engagement for people of all ages, and especially for seniors. Spending time with a pet is a powerful way to combat loneliness and isolation, bringing comfort and friendship while reducing stress and promoting overall health and wellness.

Studies show that owning a pet can help people live longer, live happier and feel more fulfilled. So, why do seniors with pets live healthier, longer lives? If you’re a retired senior and you’re thinking about getting a pet, read on to learn more about the powerful benefits of pet ownership for seniors and how it can improve your overall well-being.

Pets Benefit Your Social Life

It can be hard for seniors to stay social and active in their golden years. Pets make it easier to build a social support network by bonding through your love of animals. But for senior pet owners aging in place, social opportunities can still be hard. While independent living residents of Olympus Ranch in Murray, Utah have access to social opportunities through things like community activities, game rooms, and fitness and wellness programs, some older adults who live alone find socialization to be a challenge. Pets, especially seniors who own dogs, can help you get out of the house to meet people and find social support, both of which are important to long-term mental and physical health.

Pet-friendly senior living communities are actually one of the most desired options among seniors, thanks to the many positive benefits. In fact, all Hawthorn communities are pet friendly and there are zero pet fees or pet rent, making a Hawthorn community a great fit for any animal lover. And for older adults living at a senior living community, owning a pet is a great way to meet neighbors and make new friends.

At Jordan Oaks in Cary, North Carolina, residents can get together and walk their dogs throughout the manicured landscape or catch up with neighbors at the community dog park.

Pets also give residents easy opportunities to strike up conversations with one another. They can ask their neighbor about their pet, or what their favorite treats are. You’ll find that your pet companion can be a great asset when it comes to helping you make more human friends at a senior living community.

Pets Provide a Sense of Purpose

After retiring, escaping the daily grind can seem like a great relief. However, many new retirees find that after a few months of being on “permanent vacation,” it starts to fade. You may miss the sense of identity, meaning and purpose that came with your job, the structure it gave your days, or the social aspect of being in the office.

Instead of feeling free, relaxed and content, you may feel bored, aimless and secluded. Having pets helps you gain a sense of purpose, as you are responsible for their well-being. This responsibility can become a source of motivation that will get you through each day.

If you find yourself reluctant to get out of bed in the morning, having pets may just solve this problem for you. Animals are very vocal about their needs, and having pets will help create a daily routine where you need to be responsible for their care.

Pets Keep Seniors Active

The level of physical activity required from you will all depend on the animal you choose to adopt. However, no matter which pet you choose – from a bird, turtle, lizard to a cat or dog, all pets require work. When you take your dog on daily walks, you also get to enjoy the exercise. This improves heart health, strengthens muscles and helps maintain mobility.

Grooming, playing with and cleaning up after your pet can also be a source of physical activity. Although this may not be as much exercise as walking a dog, anything you can do to maintain your mobility and dexterity can be beneficial.

Pets Aid in Overall Wellness

Other than providing companionship, pets promote tangible health benefits that can have a long-lasting impact on your physical health and well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pet companionship can lower the risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure, encouraging a healthier heart.

Studies have shown that interacting with animals helps to reduce stress and boost your mood. Pets can brighten up your day and give you something to look forward to when you wake up in the morning, warding off feelings of anxiety, stress and depression.

Do animals promote healing for humans? Having a pet to care for and love can make a senior who is healing from an illness or health condition heal faster because the person is physically active on a regular basis. The care and routine that comes with owning a pet can also cause a distraction from pain, resulting in faster recovery.

What to Consider Before Adopting a Pet

It’s important to consider that, although pets do offer many benefits for seniors, caring for one is a major responsibility. You should only get a pet if you’re certain that you have the time, resources and ability to give the pet the proper care. If getting a pet isn’t the right choice for you right now, you could still experience many of the benefits by volunteering at a local animal shelter or joining a pet therapy program.

If you’re confident that you’re fully equipped to care for a pet, you also should carefully consider what type of animal to adopt. Do you prefer high-energy animals or calmer pets? Do you have allergies or other issues that might limit which types of animals you can take care of? What kind of pet personality would align best with your lifestyle?

Your pet should be a source of happiness and comfort, not a source of stress. By being cautious and thoughtful in your decision to adopt a pet companion, you ensure that you’re providing a good home for the animal while also improving your own life.

We’re Ready to Welcome You and Your Pet!

Questions to Ask When Touring Independent Living Communities

Choosing Your Next Home: Essential Questions to Ask When Touring Independent Living Communties

One of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make as a retiree could be choosing the right independent living community. There’s so much to consider, from dining, pricing and amenities to services and everything in between. This means it’s essential to learn as much as you can about any independent living community you’re considering.

If you are on the journey to find the perfect independent senior living community for yourself or a loved one, on-site tours are a necessity. That way you can see for yourself if the community has first-class amenities, well-appointed common areas, spacious residences and inspiring programs.

Tips for Touring Independent Living Communities

This is a big decision. In fact, moving to an independent senior living community can be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. The right community opens new doors for personal growth and connection while providing a vibrant and safe space to live out your golden years.

You deserve as much information as you need to make the decision. No question should feel too big or too small, and you shouldn’t be shy about seeking answers. People who ask questions get more answers, which present you with the information you need to make the best possible decision.

Here is a checklist of questions to ask when touring independent senior living communities. These questions will help you determine if a community is right for you.

1.     What Are the Accommodations Like?

You don’t want to live somewhere that doesn’t feel like home, so exploring a community’s residential areas, like apartments and common areas, can help you answer the question “does it feel like home?” Ask about the living quarters, how much privacy you can expect, what personal items you can bring, if any items are prohibited and when visitors are allowed.

Independent living is suited for active adults who don’t need assistance with daily life. Most of these communities don’t offer additional care like assisted living, skilled nursing or memory care, so be sure you understand what level of care you need first.

For older adults wanting a more hands-on approach to independent living, Hawthorn Senior Living has many communities that feature live-in managers who support and serve residents throughout the day.

Most communities offer a wide range of living arrangements in various sizes, layouts and locations. Do you want to be located near the hustle and bustle of community life, or would you prefer an apartment in a quieter location of the community?

Consider where you’ll be happiest and in what kind of floor plan – do you need an extra bedroom for guests, or an office space? Then ask to see an apartment similar to the one you want to live in. Imagine your possessions in the home. Other questions to ask staff and yourself include:

Do you have a warm feeling being in the community?

Is the community a place you could imagine calling home?

Is the community nice? Would you be proud to live there?

Are the community grounds, landscape and building exterior well maintained?

What is the parking like?

What types of apartments are available?

What type of security and safety measures does the community have in place?

Are there common areas for residents to socialize and spend time?

Is the community easy to navigate and accessible to less mobile residents?

2.    What Kind of Activities, Services and Amenities Are Available?

One of the main reasons active adults choose independent living communities is to engage in more social opportunities. The benefits of independent living communities are plentiful and provide fun activities, events and programs that help residents live with purpose. See if the community supports the kind of activities you like to do or would like to do.

Are you a hiker or swimmer? Do you practice yoga, play bridge or enjoy gardening? Does the community have an art room or woodworking shop? Are there classes and opportunities to continue learning and growing?

Ask to see their activities calendar, or even better, ask if you can attend a fitness class, happy hour event or craft class. Do people look happy and engaged? This way you can see firsthand what is offered while also meeting the people who already call the community home.

It’s also important to ensure the community has a great dining program, catered to your taste and preference. How many dining venues are there? What kind of food is served? Did you enjoy a meal? Be sure to enjoy a meal at each community on your short list. See what the service is like in the dining room. Other factors to consider:

Ask for a complete list of service offerings

Is the community pet-friendly?

Does the community offer housekeeping?

How does the community track resident happiness?

How does the community welcome a new resident?

Does the community offer transportation services?

3.    What Are the Costs of Senior Living?

Finances are a major factor in your decision. After you’ve taken a tour and decided that a community is on your list of top choices, ask for a breakdown of the costs. Some questions to consider:

Is there an entrance fee?

What is the base price? Is this per year or per month?

How are costs paid, and will they change over time?

Are utilities, like cable, internet, electricity, water, gas, sewer, included in the price?

Are there added fees for services or activities?

Are meals included in the price?

For example, at Hawthorn communities, our month-to-month rent provides financial benefits and peace of mind, as residents know there won’t be any unexpected expenses. Most communities include:

  • Electricity, gas, water and sewer
  • Local transportation
  • Basic cable
  • Three chef-prepared meals daily
  • Caring live-in managers
  • Planned activities and special events
  • Weekly housekeeping and linen service

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

People who ask a lot of questions get the answers they are looking for. By declaring your needs and asking whether a community is equipped to meet them, you can gradually narrow down the list of options.

Whatever retirement lifestyle you want to live, it’s waiting for you – you just have to search for it, and we’re here to help guide you. Reach out to us today to start your retirement journey or find a Hawthorn community near you.

At Linwood Estates in Lawrenceville, Georgia, residents played carnival games like ring toss and balloon darts. Daisy the Clown made balloon animals, an artist drew residents’ caricatures and there was even a visit from two best-dressed llamas.

Mountain View Gardens in Sierra Vista, Arizona, had a visit from the Scooby-Doo-themed ice cream truck, The Munchie Machine, balloon animals, a DJ and tons of games. The carnival was the talk of the town!

Out & About, Residents Spend Time on the Town

Who doesn’t love a day trip shopping, sightseeing or enjoying a delicious lunch? Hawthorn residents have been staying busy by getting out and exploring!

Summers and peaches go hand in hand. There’s nothing like biting into a perfectly ripe, sweet peach on a hot summer day. It’s one of summer’s simplest pleasures. Residents at Williams Place in Davidson, North Carolina, took a trip to Abbot Farms to get some South Carolina peaches. It was a treat for all! A lively group of ladies from Williams Place went antiquing at Sleepy Poet Antique Mall, and another spirited group went bowling.

The NASCAR Museum got a visit from the residents at Providence Meadows in Charlotte, North Carolina, and ended the day with hot dogs at the café.

Summer Fun Indoors Includes Party Games

The heat has hit record numbers in some parts of the United States this summer, and it has been too hot to enjoy outdoor activities.

It’s important for people of every age to stay hydrated. Hot-weather tips for seniors to boost hydration include drinking a few glasses of water or juice with every meal; drinking a full glass of water with medication; adding lemon to make water more appealing; and using several stainless-steel water bottles throughout the day.

The hot weather hasn’t stopped our residents from getting the most out of their summer.

From beanbag baseball at Parker Place in Mentor, Ohio, to talent shows at Bella Vista in Asheville, North Carolina, there’s definitely no shortage of fun activities to beat the heat at our communities.

What Are the Advantages of Living in a Senior Community?

Aging in Community: Exploring the Advantages of Living in a Senior Living Community

Few concepts resonate with seniors as much as the word “independence.” Before retirement, many yearn for independence from the 9-to-5 workday, but then find independence is much more than not working. What are the benefits of moving to an independent senior living community? From expanding your social circle and enjoying chef-prepared meals to saying goodbye to home maintenance and living your days the way you want, the name “independent” says it all.

What are the pros and cons of senior living communities? Research consistently shows that seniors who move into independent senior living are happier, have an increased sense of well-being and may even live longer. At Hawthorn Senior Living, older adults can enjoy an engaging lifestyle that includes personalized amenities and five-star services that encourage multidimensional wellness. Independent living at Hawthorn brings a new perspective to senior living, and it’s where active seniors searching for an all-inclusive, stress-free lifestyle can thrive. Hawthorn also provides benefits that offer a fulfilling retirement with opportunities to enjoy hobbies, pursue new passions and embrace a healthy lifestyle, as well as a place to call home.

For many adults 55 and older, making the transition from home ownership to independent living is often the first conversation. As you start your journey, you may be asking yourself these questions: Why is independent living important for seniors? Why should I consider independent living? What are the benefits of independent living facilities for seniors? Let’s dive deeper into how you can benefit from independent senior living.

Independent Living Can Be a Cure for Loneliness

Nearly one third of seniors live by themselves, and most find it difficult to stay socially active. Making plans, ensuring you have a way to get to events and finding new things to do can be difficult as we age. Staying connected is crucial to a healthy life, and senior isolation poses a very real threat to older adults. Research has shown that loneliness and social isolation put older adults at heightened risk for serious health problems, including depression and cognitive decline.

What are the advantages of living retirement communities? Independent living at a senior living community like Alexis Estates offers the opportunity to be social without the difficulty of arranging transportation or making plans. Alexis Estates – and all Hawthorn independent senior living communities – offers a wide variety of recreational activities that encourage residents to socialize and connect with one another. Whether playing a spirited game of cards, listening to live entertainment or trying a new restaurant for lunch, the goal is to develop friendships, enjoy an active lifestyle and live each day with purpose.

Goodbye to Home Maintenance and Hello to Peace of Mind

Maintaining a household is hard work, and after decades of scrubbing floors, clearing gutters and doing laundry, you’re probably ready to get help with it all. Independent living communities trade the worries of homeownership like basic utilities, maintenance and landscaping for the comforts of home.

When you move into a Hawthorn community like Maple Ridge, the on-site staff handles everything from linen services to groundskeeping and housekeeping, allowing residents to spend their time pursuing their passions. No need to search for a handyman and possibly spend hundreds of dollars for a simple repair – we’ve got it covered.

The Lifestyle Includes a Complete Culinary Experience

A homemade gourmet meal is a treat at any age. However, it becomes even more delicious when you don’t have to prepare it or clean it up. Many independent living communities provide on-site, restaurant-style dining that offers fresh, nutritious options that cater to residents’ unique dietary needs.

Dining at Hawthorn is more than just eating three meals a day. It’s a full culinary experience with delicious, freshly made food and engaging company. At Sanford Estates, the culinary experience features healthy foods and homemade meals, all catered to you. Three unique chef-prepared meals are served daily restaurant-style, so you never have to worry about cooking or cleaning – unless you want to! Our menu offers options and a variety of nutritional choices at every meal, and snacks and beverages are available 24/7.

Seniors Can Pursue New and Old Passions

Independent living communities are experts on the health and wellness needs of older adults. From activities coordinators to fitness instructors, a network of professionals is there to offer vibrant lifestyle options. Those choices allow you to try new things alongside old favorites.

If you’re interested in trying out yoga, starting a book club or maybe getting your hands dirty by planting a new garden, independent living at Hawthorn has what you are looking for and what you didn’t even know you needed. Our calendar of events changes monthly and offers a bright spectrum of opportunities designed to inspire curiosity, encourage participation and infuse joy into every day. Whatever you are looking for, there are activities, outings, on-site fitness classes, educational seminars and social clubs that cater to all.

Do you love to travel? Part of successful aging is engaging in new life experiences – and traveling is a great way to indulge in new experiences, meet new people and find a new sense of self. Why Location Matters: A Guide to Choosing a Senior Living Community

Finding Your Perfect Senior Living Community: Why Location Matters and How to Choose Wisely

You’re finally retired, and now you’re thinking, “What’s next?” You’re open to a world of possibilities now that your career isn’t taking up your time. One of the biggest – and most exciting – decisions you will make in your life is where to spend your retirement. Where you’ve lived has mostly been dependent on your job, family or friends. Now you’re free to choose a location that really inspires you on a personal level.

When it comes to getting the most out of your retirement, the move to a senior living community offers many advantages over aging in place. Location plays a huge role in finding the perfect community for you to launch your retirement journey, especially when considering the lifestyle you want to lead.

Whether you’re looking for a serene beach retirement, quiet living among the trees or a bustling urban setting surrounded by shops, restaurants and entertainment, there’s a senior living community for every lifestyle.

It’s important to think about what you’ve always wanted out of life. What do you want your retirement to look like? What type of community do you want to live in? Grab a piece of paper and make a list of must-haves. That way you can see it in plain view, putting you one step closer to beginning your exciting retirement journey. Before you start looking at resources and facilities, consider these factors:

The Distance From Friends and Family Affects Your Future

The most important question to answer is whether or not you would like family to be near. If you’re looking to spend more time with loved ones, search for senior living communities in your family’s area. Then filter by what amenities, levels of care and services you want and need. Is it a fun place to live that would be appreciated by your whole family?

If traveling piques your interest, moving further away is a viable option. When searching for communities away from family, see if there are hotels nearby. That way, family members have a place to stay close by when they come to visit.

Take Climate Into Consideration As You Investigate

If you’ve lived somewhere cold for too long and are tired of shoveling snow and the long harsh winters, retiring in Florida, near the beach or somewhere with milder temperatures and wonderful natural resources sounds tempting.

If you like to experience all the seasons and the adventures that come with it, the Midwest may be a good place to start your search. Do cultural and historical sites appeal to you? Research to find those ideal independent living locales.

Maybe you intend to work on your tennis or golf game and want to live where you can play year-round. Search for locations with mild temperatures in every season. You’ll stay more active and have more fun when you move to the right place.

Area Attractions and Amenities Can Enhance Your Lifestyle

As important as it is to enjoy the culture and atmosphere of your desired senior living community, you should also make sure you like the city where the community is located. What’s nearby? Explore what the local community has to offer that suits your interests, whether that’s nature, unique dining, shopping, sports or other nearby attractions. Do you want access to medical care and medical centers? See if the community you’re interested in has a health care team on-site. If not, research the local area to see what is offered for the independent living community.

If you love hiking, fishing or kayaking, then a location by a lake, bike trails and walking trails will be a perfect fit. If you enjoy shopping and dining out, you’ll be happiest in an urban or suburban location. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, a small idyllic town may give you the quality of life you’re seeking.

How Many Locations Does Hawthorn Senior Living Have?

Hawthorn Senior Living has over 70 buildings located throughout the continental United States, catering to an abundant number of lifestyles. What do you want your retirement life to look like? You have the freedom to choose. Do you want to enjoy a quiet and serene retirement at Salmon Creek in Boise, Idaho? Or enjoy a New England town near the beach at Colonial Gardens in Beverly, Massachusetts? Our senior living locations abound.

Finding Affordable Retirement Communities to Fit Your Budget

When you start searching for communities, take note of your current cost of living. Do you want to spend less, more or about the same? Search for communities that will make the most of your budget while being in a desired location. Be mindful of additional costs that may come up, like health care, prescriptions, taxes and so on. Senior living communities can be a smarter financial decision than aging in place – it all depends what your needs are.

At Hawthorn communities, our month-to-month rent provides peace of mind, as residents know there won’t be any unexpected expenses. Most communities also include:

Best Independent Senior Living Team Members

Committed to Care: Recognizing the Best Team Members in Independent Senior Living Communities

Bricks and mortar may be the building blocks of a senior living community, but it’s the team members who provide residents with a personalized, independent lifestyle that are the real foundation of the community’s success. They are responsible for the safety, happiness and health of the residents, and they add the vibrancy and connection essential to a high-quality retirement.

Of course, residents are the cornerstone of the senior living community culture, but behind the scenes, the community’s the team members do a lot to support them. Working at a senior living community means many busy days, finding new ways to provide exceptional service and getting to know the residents who call the community home.

There are ideal traits that a person working in senior living should possess. At Hawthorn Senior Living, we seek to hire team members who can connect with our residents, empathize with families and make those around them feel welcome and at ease. Our communities are not a typical place of work, but rather, our residents’ homes. The teams at our communities assist our residents within this intimate setting, so the job takes a special combination of compassion and professionalism. Let’s take a look at just a few of the characteristics of great senior living team members.

Creativity and Fostering Connections

Because connection is such an important part of the senior living lifestyle, the activity coordinators take the lead in creating ways for residents to connect with each other. As soon as residents move in, these team members are there to say hello and welcome, as well as start a conversation about their interests and hobbies. Members on this team must be creative and have a knack for coming up with out-of-the-box activities that appeal to residents. Not only do these team members create a diverse monthly calendar of events, but they also find ways to empower connections.

Residents often gravitate naturally to making new friends with their neighbors. Typically, this happens over meals in the dining room or over shared experiences like community clubs, fitness classes or happy hour. This means that our activity coordinators and the events they facilitate are a cornerstone of the senior living experience we provide.

Residents-Come-First Mindset

Always putting the needs of the residents first is key. Simple gestures like knowing the residents by name, taking the time to get to know them and their loved ones, and participating with residents through events, socializing and companionship is important. It shows that the team members are actively involved in the community itself.

Passion

One characteristic that’s intangible but also a very important quality for senior living team members is having a passion for their job and a caring personality. A person’s attitude will almost always affect their job performance. If a person working in senior care is uninterested in their job, the quality of their work may suffer as a result. This can have a profound negative impact on the residents.

Our culinary teams, for example, are tasked with busy days creating a full culinary experience for the residents with delicious, freshly made meals and engaging company. These individuals must retain a passion not only for food but also for working with seniors and adapting their plans to accommodate all residents’ needs and desires.

Our Team Members Are Here for You

We will never stop striving to make our communities a vibrant, secure place to live and a great place to work. We are dedicated to our employees’ success, as we know that the enriching lifestyle they provide to our residents is at the heart of all we do.

To tour one of our communities and meet our team members, contact a Hawthorn Senior Living community near you. We are happy to show you our community and introduce you to the caring, hardworking individuals who assist our residents.
