Summer Fun in Full Swing: An Inside Look at the Hawthorn Senior Living Lifestyle

The summer season often brings lots of sunshine, vibrant colors and a new sense of purpose, but it can also bring dangerously high temperatures and extreme weather. Older adults are more prone to heat stress, so it’s important for senior living communities to come up with safe, unique activities for seniors to stay engaged while having fun.

Sunshine boosts mood and provides the vitamin D you need for strong bones and muscles. But of course, you’ll want to avoid too much sun and heat while enjoying outdoor summer activities.

At Hawthorn Senior Living, our teams are always dreaming up ways to inspire creativity, engage minds within our communities and provide abundant social activities for seniors. Our residents enjoy summer activities that are fun-filled, safe and engaging.

Hawthorn communities have so many activities, hobbies for seniors, events and special occasions that it’s a party every day! The past months have been chock-full of entertainment and socializing with friends and family, and the summer heat hasn’t stopped us from having good times. So, what do seniors do for fun during the summer? Let’s look back to see what a few of our communities have been up to lately!

Fourth of July Festivities and Patriotic Fun for Seniors

Celebrating the Fourth of July is marked by fireworks, barbecuing on the grill, and friends and family members coming together to celebrate our country’s independence. Residents at Hawthorn communities celebrated in true fashion with a patriotic theme.

How do you make Fourth of July fun? It was a sea of red, white and blue at Northridge in Fishers, Indiana. Residents dressed from head to toe in our nation’s colors for Independence Day and truly embodied the spirit of community.

Summer Carnival Offered Senior-Friendly Games As Well As Llamas

Summer fun came to Hawthorn communities as residents enjoyed a traditional summer carnival as part of the July activities.

At Linwood Estates in Lawrenceville, Georgia, residents played carnival games like ring toss and balloon darts. Daisy the Clown made balloon animals, an artist drew residents’ caricatures and there was even a visit from two best-dressed llamas.

Mountain View Gardens in Sierra Vista, Arizona, had a visit from the Scooby-Doo-themed ice cream truck, The Munchie Machine, balloon animals, a DJ and tons of games. The carnival was the talk of the town!

Out & About, Residents Spend Time on the Town

Who doesn’t love a day trip shopping, sightseeing or enjoying a delicious lunch? Hawthorn residents have been staying busy by getting out and exploring!

Summers and peaches go hand in hand. There’s nothing like biting into a perfectly ripe, sweet peach on a hot summer day. It’s one of summer’s simplest pleasures. Residents at Williams Place in Davidson, North Carolina, took a trip to Abbot Farms to get some South Carolina peaches. It was a treat for all! A lively group of ladies from Williams Place went antiquing at Sleepy Poet Antique Mall, and another spirited group went bowling.

The NASCAR Museum got a visit from the residents at Providence Meadows in Charlotte, North Carolina, and ended the day with hot dogs at the café.

Summer Fun Indoors Includes Party Games

The heat has hit record numbers in some parts of the United States this summer, and it has been too hot to enjoy outdoor activities.

It’s important for people of every age to stay hydrated. Hot-weather tips for seniors to boost hydration include drinking a few glasses of water or juice with every meal; drinking a full glass of water with medication; adding lemon to make water more appealing; and using several stainless-steel water bottles throughout the day.

The hot weather hasn’t stopped our residents from getting the most out of their summer.

From beanbag baseball at Parker Place in Mentor, Ohio, to talent shows at Bella Vista in Asheville, North Carolina, there’s definitely no shortage of fun activities to beat the heat at our communities.
