Statement of Fairness: Considering senior living options for yourself or a loved one? We’re here to help at every step. And even though we specialize in independent living communities, our goal is for YOU to find your best path to gracious retirement living, and part of how we achieve that is by providing reliable information on all types of senior living, not just the ones we offer. When our offerings serve as useful illustrations to a specific topic, you can find that information in the attached sidebar.

Tip 1: Experience Senior Living One Step at a Time

You’ve taken the time to find the right community. Adjusting to senior living will take time, too. The first few days, weeks or even months may feel overwhelming. Give yourself the luxury of moving at your own pace to familiarize yourself with your new environment and routine.

As you ease into it, lean on family, friends and your new community for support.

Personalize your living space. Unpack with the help of family and friends and let them help you decorate your new space with the items that make you feel most at home. Surround yourself with the same family photos, favorite mugs and treasured heirlooms you’ve always loved.

Keep up cherished traditions. If you always talk to your daughter or best friend on Tuesday afternoons, don’t let your move stop you. Continue to attend birthday parties and holiday dinners. Maintain as many outside connections and activities as you can.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Every community has its own way of welcoming new faces. Team members are there to help you, as are other residents. Asking their advice is a great way to start a conversation and meet people who will be happy to get to know the new kid on the block.

Invite a family member or friend for a meal or a special event. Enjoy the sense of security that comes with having a familiar face at your side.

Connect with the community. Enjoy the perks of eating in the community dining room and participating in group activities. Nothing will make your transition easier than getting to know your neighbors.

As you adapt to the rhythms of daily life, you’ll discover all the nice touches that make your new surroundings feel like home. Before long, you’ll develop a greater sense of belonging. You might even find yourself helping another new resident learn the ropes and overcome the hurdles that come with life-changing experiences.

Tip 2: Experience Senior Living with an Open Mind

Like all life-changing experiences, the physical and emotional demands of moving take a toll.

It's completely understandable to have a mix of feelings about moving. Everyone has good days and bad days, and that's especially true during big changes like this. It's natural to feel a little nostalgic for a previous home.

We can switch our perspective by thinking about what you’ve gained. Many people find keeping a gratitude journal is a wonderful way to improve their perspective as they adjust to a new lifestyle.

Building security

Fun and games

Maintenance-free living

Group activities

Time for hobbies

Learning opportunities

Convenient services

New friendships

Shared experiences

All these senior living benefits work in harmony to enhance your physical, emotional and mental well-being.

Tip 3: Experience Senior Living Benefits in Your Daily Routine and Unlock a More Fulfilling Life

Establishing a routine will bring comfort and structure to your new life. Experiment with what works for you.

Create a Daily Schedule. Start by crafting a daily routine based on activities you enjoy, such as exercise classes, hobbies or social events, just like you might have seen in community calendars.

Stay Organized. Use a planner or set reminders to keep track of your schedule and ensure you don’t miss anything important.

Prioritize Self-Care. Incorporate rest, relaxation, and alone time into your schedule. Set aside time for activities like reflection, journaling, or meditation to nurture mindfulness.

Be Flexible: While it’s great to have a plan, be open to trying new things. Remember always to honor your own needs and boundaries to maintain balance.

By incorporating a routine, you’ll feel more grounded and in control of your new environment. Gradually, you’ll discover a pattern that gives you a sense of belonging and brings your life joy.

Tip 4: Experience Senior Living as Your Chance to Make New Friends?

We call senior living residences “communities” for good reason. Reigniting your social life is the best way to experience senior living and one of the top reasons people move there.

Each day presents the opportunity to meet and interact with others, fostering solid bonds and offering interconnected physical, mental and emotional benefits for your well-being.

Social adults are healthier adults. Whether heading out for a walk, birdwatching or taking a class together, you’re doing great things for your heart, muscles, weight and immune system. When you have a friend with whom you can enjoy these things, you’ll do them more often.

Social adults stay sharper. Mentally stimulating activities like conversations and games are proven brain boosters.

Social adults have emotional resilience. Confiding in friends can provide valuable support in good times and bad, helping you get through life’s challenges.

From day one, you’ll meet people from various walks of life – some who share your interests and others who can expand your worldview. The more time you spend connecting with people in your community, the stronger your feeling of belonging will grow.

Tip 5: Experience Senior Living as a Time to Explore New Things

Be a joiner. You can deepen your involvement in your hobbies or discover something new through your community’s various programs, activities, clubs and events.

Be a learner. Take advantage of the educational opportunities that come your way. Whether you want to tackle that new computer operating system or discover the wonders of the galaxies, mentally stimulating activities are fun and keep you relevant and up to date.

Be curious about other people. Make a conscious effort to get to know your new neighbors. Making new connections and bonding with new friends will greatly improve your happiness within the community.

You may have to step outside your comfort zone to realize the full benefit of staying active and engaged, but the result will be a life that radiates purpose and fulfillment.

Live Life on Your Terms

Building meaningful connections and cultivating a new sense of purpose takes time, but you have family, friends and your community to cheer you on. From establishing a comfortable routine to stepping out to meet people and try new things, you’ll thrive in this new chapter.

How do you know if you’re saving enough for retirement? It’s a question we ask ourselves often. We all want our golden years to be stress-free, but the financial planning part can be confusing. If you’ve ever wondered how to ensure your retirement nest egg not only lasts but thrives, you’re in the right place. This isn’t about pinching pennies; it’s about finding ways to make your money go further.

Financial planners estimate that you will be spending 70% to 80% less during your retirement years than while you were working, so now you must consider if your savings, investments and Social Security will add up to the lifestyle you desire.

What is a realistic budget for retirement? There’s no one-size-fits-all strategy that will work for everyone, but we can all use a good financial tune-up from time to time. In this blog, you’ll learn practical strategies, smart budgeting tips and lifestyle adjustments that empower you to trim unnecessary expenses while safeguarding your retirement goals, even on a fixed income.

Statement of Fairness: Considering senior living options for yourself or a loved one?

COST-CUTTING STRATEGIES: LIVING AT HOME OR MOVING TO A RETIREMENT COMMUNITY?

Aging in Place

The desire to remain at home as we age, also known as aging in place, holds great appeal. But certain costs come with it. If you are seeking to remain in your home, you’ll have to budget for groceries, transportation, home safety and accessibility modifications, social activities, and home health care. While aging in place can be a viable option, it’s crucial to approach it with realistic expectations and careful planning.

Another idea to consider is downsizing in the retirement years. Housing costs represent the biggest personal budget expenditure. A smaller home comes with lower utility and maintenance costs. Using assets to pay off a mortgage eliminates a hefty monthly bill.

Senior Living

A move to a retirement community can be rich in financial, physical and emotional benefits. Some independent living communities offer an all-inclusive monthly fee that covers rent, meals, amenities, transportation and recreation.

Not only will you know what you’ll be spending monthly, but you’ll be enjoying an active lifestyle in an enriched environment created especially for older adults. The proceeds from selling a house is one way to pay for a senior living community.

What Does Long-Term Care Insurance Cover?

Long-term care is for individuals who need help with the activities of daily living such as eating, dressing and bathing. These services can be provided through in-home support agencies or given in a residential community. A long-term care insurance policy pays for the services that Medicare doesn’t cover.

The younger you are when you purchase long-term care insurance, the lower your premiums will be. However, getting a policy at an older age – for example, 60 to 65 – may offer better affordability with higher premiums but less total dollars paid. In other words, while premiums may be higher if you purchase a long-term care policy at an older age, you may still save money in the long run because you will pay premiums for a shorter period of time.

Enroll in Medicare as soon as you qualify. Your initial enrollment period begins when you turn 65. You can start the process as early as three months before your birthday, and the period ends three months after the month you turn 65. Medicare will pay for care in a skilled nursing facility for 100 days.

Read more about Medicare benefits by downloading Medicare and Home Health Care.

Explore Supplemental and Advantage insurance plans. You will pay monthly premiums based on the policy you choose, but they help pay for medical costs that Medicare does not. Some plans offer extra coverage for hearing, dental, vision and even gym memberships.

Medicare drug coverage (Part D) can help with the cost of prescription drugs. Review your plan to see if your specific prescriptions are covered. Ask your pharmacist about coupons and other savings programs you can use.

If you’re under 65, contribute to a health savings account (HSA). This is available to you through banks, credit unions and other financial institutions even if you’re not working. Your pre-tax contributions can be withdrawn tax-free and used for qualified medical expenses that include long-term care, doctor visits, prescriptions, ambulance costs, psychiatric care and more.

What Is the Best Fixed-Income Strategy?

The simple answer is planning and budgeting.

People spend the most money on housing, transportation and food. No surprise there, but in order to understand where your dollars are going, write down every purchase and payment you make, no matter how small. Whether it’s a cup of coffee or a major home improvement project, keep track.

Divide your expenses into Needs, Wants and Savings/Debt Payment.

What is your income? Add up:

Social Security

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Pensions

Withdrawals from 401(k) or 403(b) plans

Part-time salaries

Income from rental properties and other sources

With your income total, allocate 50% to Needs, 30% to Wants and 20% to Savings/Debt Payment. How do your spending and income numbers match up? This exercise can be a real eye-opener and point to areas where cost-cutting is needed.

If you’re still employed, start saving early and contribute to individual retirement accounts that work to your tax advantage.

How Can I Cut Back on Spending When I’m on a Fixed Income?

If you’ve created your budget, you know where you’re spending your money. Now you can make thoughtful changes, not painful ones.

If you’re living with a spouse or partner, do you really need two cars anymore? Now that you’re in your post-career years, you can easily cut the cost of gas, maintenance and insurance in half.

You can lower your home and auto insurance by paying a higher insurance deductible. If that’s a risk you’re willing to take, you’ll pay less each month. Shop around for a less expensive policy. The insurance business is highly competitive, and the differences in rates may surprise you.

Now that you have a fixed income, make your best effort to pay down any debt. Refinance your mortgage if there’s a lower rate available, downsize or move to a senior community within your means.

Are there life insurance policies you no longer need? Cashing those in may give you the extra funds to pay off other debts.

You may be paying for fees that are taking money out of your investments. Review your financial statements, and if the fees aren’t stated plainly, give the bank or institution a call.

Internet, cable and streaming costs keep creeping up. If you’re not enjoying or watching some of those channels, cancel them. Call your provider and ask if you’re eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program. The ACP is a federally funded program that could decrease your bill by $30 or more.

Vacations are not out of the question. Significant savings can be had if travel time is scheduled during the off-season. As a bonus, there will be fewer tourists competing to see the same attractions.

How can I help my loved one adjust to living on a fixed income?

Please note: Nothing in this article should be construed as medical advice. Please consult your licensed medical provider before beginning any senior fitness exercise program or new diet plan.

If you had access to something that could improve your life in just about every way, including reducing your chances of dementia, would you take it? If it could guarantee that you would not only look and feel better, but also potentially lengthen your life and the quality of your life, would you use it?

The Free, Powerful Tool That Boosts Brain and Body Health

Every single one of us has access to that benefit right now. It’s exercise.

“Exercise is the closest thing we’ve found to a magic pill for combating the effects of aging,” says Dr. Linda Fried, dean of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, in an interview with Columbia Magazine.

Exercise appears to have significant benefits to help ward off dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Association,

Studies on exercise in middle-aged and older adults show a link to better thinking and memory. They also report lower rates of dementia.

And:

Research shows that people who exercise regularly may be up to 20% less likely to develop symptoms of dementia.

Exercise really can be a wonder drug. It’s easy to start, easy to enjoy, and best of all, it’s free.

Okay, it costs time and effort. But still, regular movement, along with healthy eating, helps fight aging better than any other non-medical treatment. Any exercise helps, at any age. Whether you jog, do chair yoga with a walker or practice wheelchair aerobics, you begin to enjoy the benefits immediately.

Getting started can feel overwhelming. If you feel this way, you’re in good company. With so much emphasis on extreme workouts, exercises for older adults don’t get enough attention.

Restarting Your Fitness Routine After a Break

I’m 71 and have prided myself on good lifelong exercise habits. But lately I’ve been feeling sluggish.

Surgeries and post-operative physical therapy sidelined a good bit of my exercise routine for the last five years. I couldn’t walk, run or work out normally. Boy, can I feel it, too!

A part of me wants to hurl myself at the machines at the gym. But too many older folks try to pick up where they left off decades ago. Not only is that foolhardy, it’s dangerous.

A wiser part of me knows that small steps make for a better comeback. It’s also the right way for anyone to start an exercise program: step by small, gentle step.

But which steps, and how much?

As with all things, it depends on you, your expectations and what you want your life to be like as you age. Whether it’s overall strength or improving your balance, it’s all important. It also depends on whether you’re willing to invest a little time to get all the benefits.

How to Build a Senior Fitness Routine That Sticks

You may be familiar with Internet phenomenon Joan MacDonald. By 78 years old, she achieved remarkable results after doctors diagnosed her with multiple serious illnesses at 70. She transformed herself into a fitness phenom and has the body to prove it. Lots of folks our age want what she has: terrific health, a great outlook and better quality of life.

Joan worked to transform herself several hours a day, six days a week for years. She took supplements and ate special food to work with her fitness pro daughter in Mexico. Her entire life now revolves around exercising.

Great inspiration and achievement, but is that realistic for the rest of us?

If you want to be healthier and live your best life (and who doesn’t?), there’s an easier way. Most of us need gentle exercises for seniors to begin.

Here’s what the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommends. In this series of articles, the NIH explains what you can work up to over time.

According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, you should:

Aim for at least 150 minutes (2½ hours) of moderate exercise each week. This can include activities like brisk walking or fast dancing.

You should also do muscle-strengthening activities, like lifting weights or doing sit-ups, at least two days a week.

For best results, try to combine multiple components of exercises. For example: try balance training as well as aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities.

If you prefer vigorous-intensity aerobic activity (like running or cycling), aim for at least 75 minutes a week.

Being active at least three days a week is best, but doing anything is better than doing nothing at all.

If you live in a Hawthorn community, consider engaging with a licensed physical therapist. These medical professionals work independently from the community. They are third-party providers and offer their services on-site for your convenience. They can help you build an exercise routine that is safe and focused on your personal health goals.

But all this can sound like a lot if you’ve never exercised regularly.

Let’s put this into perspective. You and I have 168 hours every week. NIH suggests that we take only two and a half for our exercise program. That’s only a fraction of all the time we have.

Isn’t your overall health, including helping prevent dementia, worth a small fraction of your time?

I think so. You will, too, once you enjoy the benefits of gentle exercise for seniors to get you started.

We still need to work up to that point. “Until we have our healthy habits set, any hope of moving for two and a half hours a week is hard to reach.” That journey begins with one step. Ideally, it’s an easy one to repeat.

Here’s what I did.

Small Habits, Big Results: The Power of Consistency

Right before bed I used to toss a warm top on my favorite chair. Upon waking up, instead of grabbing my dumbbells (also close by), I grabbed the top. Then I’d pad to my office and start working. Three hours later I’d still be in my jammies, tired, slumped over, and in no mood to exercise, because now my back hurt.

In his terrific book Atomic Habits, James Clear writes that it’s not about the goal, such as to lose 10 pounds. We need a way of life that helps us build whole-person wellness doing things we genuinely enjoy doing. That’s built on choices, which become habits. Habits become systems that support quality of life.

That way, when we successfully drop the 10 pounds, they stay off. Habits make it easier to stay active.

Start With One Simple Habit

My first habit to break: choosing my computer instead of a few exercises each morning.

I put my laptop away at night. Now, to warm up for the day, I do a few sets with light dumbbells. Those few moments of happy movement make all the difference. It also makes me want to do more.

I’m adding the “more” in similarly small increments, until they become habits. Each small step – each new habit – is part of a system that is helping me refocus on exercise during my favorite time of day.

The more I exercise, the better I feel, the more I want to move.

Easy Ways to Begin Exercising at Any Age

At Hawthorn, all communities feature circular walking paths around the building. Walk a mile or just walk a while. Walk alone or invite a friend. Either way, research says that even walking does the body lots of good, especially for those interested in senior fitness.

According to an article by Harvard Health Publishing,

Older people who are physically active and who exercise regularly are more likely to walk without assistance and do other activities of daily living on their own.

Set a habit of regular walks around the community. Invite friends for even greater benefit. When movement becomes fun, you’ll want to do more of it.

Hawthorn communities feature a broad variety of classes and gym equipment specifically designed for every age and ability. If you have mobility or disability issues, you can get help with the machines. If weights or machines aren’t for you, you can explore a variety of classes.

Wellness classes offer the chance to meet new friends. Nothing motivates so much as having fun. When friends join us for exercise, we benefit even more.

Weather doesn’t need to stop you, either! Explore indoor classes during rain or snow, and walk outdoors when the weather favors both you and the flowers.

The National Institutes of Health suggests:

Begin your exercise program slowly with low-intensity exercises.

Warm up before exercising and cool down afterward.

Pay attention to your surroundings when exercising outdoors.

Drink water before, during and after your workout session, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Wear appropriate fitness clothes and shoes for your activity.

If you have specific health conditions, discuss your exercise and physical activity plan with your health care provider.

Just start. If you stay open and curious, something will eventually appeal to you. When it does, you’ll make time for it.

As soon as it becomes a habit, you have the start of a system. Systems support healthy aging by becoming part of who you are, not when they’re just a task on your to-do list.

How Hawthorn Communities Make Fitness Easy and Enjoyable

Choosing to live in an independent senior living community comes with many benefits. All Hawthorn communities include a convenient gym, regular fitness classes and beautiful places to walk – along with neighbors and friends who appreciate fitness like you do, and Activity Coordinators dedicated to creating activities that delight and challenge your fitness in all areas. These perks are all designed to support your journey at no extra cost.

Let’s reduce the chances of heart disease, cognitive decline and many of the illnesses that can plague us as we age. The best way to do that is to move, move often and love how you feel as you do it. You deserve it.

Retirement. What images does it conjure up? A time to break free from the hectic pace of life? Adventure? Exploration? As enticing as that may sound, can all this freedom be too overwhelming?

Many of us find ourselves clinging to a daily routine schedule and passing by the joy and exhilaration that this new life chapter can bring.

Why Don’t We Want to Embrace Change and Explore New Life Experiences?

This paradox can be challenging to navigate. Everyone says they want to try new things and explore their hobbies, yet that’s not always what happens. Common sense tells us it’s natural to feel safe with the familiar and fear the unknown. Staying in your comfort zone feels too good to give up. However, life-changing events often push us toward new experiences, and embracing them can lead to personal growth.

Striking a balance between these two desires is challenging, but making the most of everyday living and enjoying free time is essential for your mental and physical well-being. The key to achieving balance is deciding how frequently and to what extent you should step out of your comfort zone.

Embrace Change with Confidence

Retirement is not the end but the beginning of a transformative journey filled with endless possibilities. In these days of extended and improved lifespans, you can truly seize the day. Pursue your passions, explore new interests, and connect with more people. Experience senior living in a way that supports independence and enriches your daily routine schedule. Embrace change. It all starts with a simple word: Yes.

Saying yes can be the cure for boredom and the spark that gives you a fresh start with longtime interests, connections, and passions. However, letting go of the anxieties and fears holding you back—such as anxiety about moving or concerns about transitioning into retirement—is not always as easy as it sounds. That’s why we’re here with a few tips to help you embrace change and gently nudge you out of your comfort zone.

Embrace Change by Saying Yes

When we say yes to a new direction, we commit to opening ourselves up to life’s possibilities. We inspire ourselves to embrace change, combat boredom, and push beyond what we normally do every day. Moving anxiety or fear of change can make transitions difficult, but knowing the benefits of senior living and focusing on the positives can ease the process.

Think back to the interests you’ve had throughout the years. Maybe gazing at the stars once filled you with awe and wonder. Now that you’re retired, open yourself up to a new world of learning. Say yes and reignite your passion by enrolling in an online astronomy course, reading books about space exploration, or attending a lecture series on astrophysics. Just think: In 2018, 96-year-old scientist Arthur Ashkin won the Nobel Prize for his work with lasers.

Knowing that lifelong learning is key to aging well, recent studies have shown its positive impact on seniors’ well-being. As older adults continue to seek learning opportunities throughout their lives, staying engaged in education—whether formal or informal—helps them remain independent, fulfilled, and mentally strong, especially those who may be more vulnerable. Supporting independence through lifelong learning fosters confidence and self-sufficiency.

The findings highlight the importance of making community-based learning programs widely available. By promoting lifelong learning, we can create more inclusive and supportive environments where older adults can grow, connect, and thrive in their daily lives.

The daily activities and events offered in retirement communities help with living in transition by encouraging seniors to explore new passions, reconnect with old interests, and embrace life experiences. Every activity where older adults engage their minds supports cognitive wellness and helps them transition with care.

Embrace Change by Overcoming Obstacles

Mohr Keet made history as the world’s oldest bungee jumper at the age of 96, proving that age should never be a barrier to adventure. Born in 1924, he lived through significant historical events and maintained a mindset of resilience and determination.

While most people his age choose a quieter lifestyle, Keet embraced the extreme sport of bungee jumping, defying expectations and showing that the human spirit is capable of incredible feats. His daring leap was met with skepticism, but he was determined to prove that it was possible, embodying the belief that life should be lived to the fullest.

Keet’s successful jump was more than a personal triumph—it became an inspiration for people of all ages to challenge their own limits. His experience shattered stereotypes about aging and encouraged older individuals to pursue their dreams fearlessly. With his bold leap, Keet reminded the world that adventure and excitement have no expiration date. His legacy continues to inspire, proving that it’s never too late to push boundaries and seek new thrills.

When you find yourself asking, “What’s the worst that can happen?” and can’t come up with a realistic answer, why not try it out? These acts of courage and determination motivate us to embrace change and overcome obstacles. You’ll feel accomplished and proud.

Three Tips to Help You Embrace Change

1. Conquer your anxieties.

Knowledge is power. If you’re afraid to take that first step, learn more about whatever interests you. Want to take a trip but have reservations? Research their local news online. Find others who have done that and write them a letter or an email to see if they'd share their experiences with you. You'll conquer your anxiety, learn important tips for your adventures, and maybe even make some new friends who share your passion. Some senior communities have travel programs that will boost your confidence and enjoyment while providing you the comforts of a community lifestyle abroad.

2. Reframe challenges into opportunities to grow.

As we age, we come across challenges, but rather than letting them overwhelm us, we can view them as a way to help us learn and develop. When we reframe our perspective, we can approach obstacles with positivity and overcome them more easily. If we look at them as simply opportunities in disguise, we unlock our potential and amaze ourselves with how much we can accomplish.

Harriette Thompson, a classical pianist and cancer survivor, wasn’t much of a runner throughout her life. However, when a friend was raising money for a cancer charity, she decided to step out of her comfort zone. At the age of 76, she entered the Rock ’n’ Roll San Diego Marathon. Originally planning to walk the distance, she found the courage to change her mind.

“I noticed when I got there that everybody was running, so I decided to run. I decided it was a good cause, and I tried again the next year and the next year.”

At 92, Harriette became the oldest woman to finish a marathon – so far.

3. “Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.”

That’s the Navy SEAL way of saying rushing less results in achieving more. Taking a slower, less stressful approach lets you ease into something new and get the most from your experience. Putting this idea into practice can:

Reduce Stress & Anxiety – Taking a slow and steady approach helps prevent us from feeling overwhelmed, making change more manageable and enjoyable.

Build Confidence & Adaptability – Easing into new experiences allows time to adjust, learn and grow without pressure, leading to greater success in the long run.

Enhance Long-Term Success – A smooth transition into change increases the chances of lasting benefits, helping you fully embrace new opportunities without burnout.

Embrace Change With the Help of Others?

Join a club or group focused on an activity you want to try. Whether it’s painting, dancing, or book discussions, new experiences are more enjoyable when shared.

Getting over your fears—whether it’s anxiety over moving, starting a new hobby, or meeting new people—can be as simple as starting a conversation. Find support and encouragement through your family, church, or social group.

Recruit friends to help you stay on track. Having a support system can make transitions smoother and provide the motivation you need to keep going.

One of the best things about experience senior living is meeting people from all walks of life. With so many life experiences gathered in one place, you’re bound to find someone who has navigated similar challenges and can offer guidance on how to transition into retirement or embrace new routines.

Say Yes to an Action Plan

Set your goals with these three ideas in mind.

To embrace change with a positive attitude, make a conscious effort to say yes more often. This doesn’t mean making big, life-changing decisions every day. The yes way of living is easier when you start small. Try a new dish at dinner. Take a short morning walk. Strike up a conversation with someone new. Each small step supports independence and helps build confidence.

Be spontaneous. Shake up your daily routine schedule occasionally and welcome new experiences as they come. Flexibility makes it easier to adapt to change and enjoy the unexpected moments life brings.

By keeping an open mind, you’ll be more likely to recognize and take advantage of opportunities that enrich your life and make transitioning with care feel natural.

Embrace Change with Open Arms

There’s no escaping change, so make it your ally. Use it to take charge of your life. Retirement is the perfect time to rest, but let that rejuvenation invigorate you to explore new interests, create meaningful connections, and experience the benefits of senior living. As one yes leads to another, you’ll find yourself more comfortable with living in transition and more excited about what’s next.

An exciting world awaits you outside your comfort zone. All you have to do is say yes!

By Julia Hubbel

Feeling lonely? You’re not alone. In fact, those of us who feel lonely are in excellent company, yet remarkably, we’re not finding one another. Especially as we age, we lose partners, friends, family members. Such losses affect our overall health and whole-person wellness, especially if we don’t create new connections. Loneliness seems to get worse as we age, but it doesn’t have to. By the same token, those seniors who invest in their quality of life by investing in new friendships gain emotional well-being and many other health benefits.

Let’s explore how we can address the inevitable losses, then fill the empty places in our lives with love and laughter. Investing in social connections, especially as we age, can transform every aspect of healthy aging and is an essential part of whole-person wellness.

When my father died of cancer in the late 1980s, something we knew was coming, my mother was prepared. Once she took care of the demands his death placed on the family, she took care of herself.

I flew with her from Denver to California to visit an old family friend. When Ed opened the door to greet us, she fell head-over-heels in love. On the spot.

While they didn’t end up living together, that connection bolstered my mother’s final years in ways none of us could have imagined. She was more joyful, more youthful, energetic and hopeful than she had been in decades. She also made new friendships as she moved into her future instead of living in her past.

The object of my mother’s affection, Ed, had lost his partner some years before. A gregarious, energetic man, he welcomed my mother into his life. His positive attitude strongly influenced her commitment to build new friendships at her senior living community. Ed’s friendship enhanced her overall health for the rest of her years.

During this article we discuss the health risks of social isolation and loneliness. We strive to present reputable sources, but as always, please talk to a medical professional when evaluating the health impact of new activities.

Health Impacts of Isolation and Loneliness

The isolation many feel after the loss of a partner or family member can move us from grief to depression, especially if we don’t take steps to take care of ourselves. Those of us who have lived alone for a long time can, over time, feel the walls pressing in without the presence of others to keep life lively.

According to an article about making friends after 60 in Senior Lifestyle, the double whammy of loneliness and isolation packs a terrible punch.

According to the article, among the challenges we may face include:

Increased potential for coronary heart disease or stroke, according to the National Institutes of Health

Higher risk of cognitive decline and dementia

Mental and physical decline as well as an increased risk of death and greater risk of long-term illnesses like arthritis, lung disease and impaired mobility

Elders living alone and isolated may experience more abuse and are victims of scams

Loneliness is in the news all over the globe. It’s not just a factor of aging; many of us at any age can feel lonely. The best news is that there is so much we can do about it, and most of it involves a lot of fun.

If fun sounds pretty good right now, please read on.

The Good News About Making Friends

Here’s a short list of what you can expect when you start the gorgeous process of inviting new people into your life. Again, this from Senior Lifestyle:

We enjoy greater mental health and feelings of well-being.

Our risk of dementia diminishes as well as the decline of our cognitive health. Even if we are dealing with dementia, social circles can reduce the effects.

Age-related conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease to arthritis and cancer can improve because the inflammation that causes them is lower. Studies suggest you may live longer and more happily.

We enjoy a stronger sense of purpose and belonging.

Attitude is a huge factor in how well we age, and having friends has a big impact on our positivity. Our positivity begets more friends, too. We get a greater sense of purpose because having more friends boosts self-esteem. The greater our self-esteem and social health, the more easily you can commit to whole-person wellness such as more physical activity, better nutrition and letting go of bad habits like smoking, often in the company of friends.

Our new friends want us to be healthy, have fun and hang out with them more often. They want us to live a long time! Mom’s friend Ed was a hiker and outdoorsman. His attitudes about health certainly impacted my mother’s choices.

Nature Abhors a Vacuum

The Greek philosopher Aristotle said that Nature abhors a vacuum. When someone close to us passes, that leaves a hole in our hearts forever. Yet Nature, in her wisdom, wants us to be fulfilled. It’s up to us to fill those places.

Back in 2020, I bought a home on a forested slope in Oregon. The landscape dated from 1977. Since then, many of the great trees and bushes have died, leaving their stumps. Slowly but surely, I cleared those stumps out and planted new maples, cherries, hemlocks and rhododendrons - even coastal sequoias, whose great height will shade my deck in time.

Already, fall at my house is more colorful. The new trees and shrubs have eagerly put down their roots. They’re holding hands beneath the surface, just like we do with good friends. That powerful connection helps the trees survive our winter storms the same way a community of friends helps us survive life’s inevitable curveballs.

It’s seductive to believe that we’re the only ones feeling the pain of loss or sadness. When we create a social community of meaningful relationships, we learn swiftly that everyone else is likely feeling the same things we are. That alone is reason to feel better, when we are seen and understood by our peers.

That’s why aging and friendship go hand in hand; we need new friends because we’re aging, and aging well depends on our willingness to let others get to know us.

Let’s discuss some of the many ways we can bring light into our lives when we need it the most.

Join an activity. If nothing appeals to you, start an activity of your own. You never know who might share your interest in collecting Russian nesting dolls. Put up a notice on a community board or let the Activities Director help you get the word out.

Faith-based services can offer both solace and access to new friends. Whether you’re religious or identify as spiritual, there will be something that appeals. You can join online or in person. Either way it’s a safe place to start your friendship journey.

If you’re intellectually curious, signing up for a book club or expanding your education with an online or community college course has the added value of providing mental stimulation as well as access to new friends. Discussions, debates and adult learning all contribute significantly to improving cognitive function.

Feeling like you don’t matter anymore? You do - especially now. The best way to find this out is to volunteer. Whether you show up at the kitty rescue or the homeless shelter, find a cause to support or want to serve holiday meals to those in need, your contribution will make a big difference. Even better, putting your skills and knowledge to work mentoring or tutoring is a great reminder that you will always have something important to contribute, and people will appreciate you for it.

Among the very best ways to make positive changes in your life in several areas at the same time is to sign up for an exercise class, or invite people to start walking with you. Physical activity doesn’t just feel good; people who feel good are fun to be with, and it’s easy to make friends with folks who are having fun.

Start a casual conversation. Paying a compliment or sharing a casual observation can open doors to a conversation. This may seem difficult at first if you’re out of the habit, but like any skill, practice makes it easier.

Travel. Few experiences help us see with new eyes better than travel. With companies that specialize in the older traveler like Road Scholar, you may find yourself charmed by the adventure and the people you meet.

One of the core values of Hawthorn Senior Living is to provide opportunity and support for these kinds of activities. A dining room full of people is a new opportunity for friends every day, and our Travel Program gives our residents a safe way to meet new people and explore new horizons.

The more we spend time alone, the more difficult it can feel to reopen doors to new connections. Especially among older people, the need for companionship is great, and it adds to our life expectancy as well as our joy.

That’s why it’s so important to recognize the simple truth: if you’re feeling lonely and isolated, there are millions who feel exactly the way you do. You may not fall head-over-heels in love like my mother did, but you may well fall into all kinds of friendships, and as a result, fall back in love with life.

Go out and make friends now. You deserve it. You're worth the risk, and your quality of life depends on it!

Have fun!

Have fun!
